Bokani Dyer is a leader of the new wave of contemporary young jazz artists from South Africa. A pianist and composer, his music is appreciated for its creativity and emotional depth, with “soulful notes, spiritual tones, sophisticated concepts, and simply presented notions”.
His repertoire reflects both a strong sense of cultural identity as well as his philosophy of musical egalitarianism, a celebration of all music without borders. Winner of multiple awards including the Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Jazz in 2011, Dyer’s recent highlight performances include the Musiques en Ete festival in Geneva, Switzerland, the Safaricom festival in Nairobi, Kenya, and Jazzahead in Bremen, Germany.
Some notable activities for 2016 include: a collaboration with SA theatre director Mkhululi Mabija on his production My Daughter/Son, producing saxophonist Sisonke Xonti’s debut album Iyonde, and performing as a soloist at the launch of the SA/Russia Cultural Seasons in Moscow and St Petersburg. Dyer curated a regular slot at The Orbit Jazz Club, the Jazzafrica Legacy Sessions, dedicated to transcribing and performing the works of SA jazz composers from the last decades. He was also honoured to accept an invitation from legendary trumpeter Feya Faku to join his Quintet.
Bokani will perform a rare solo set for the Muizenberg Jazz Festival, debuting some of his latest compositions.
