The band was established as a Musiquelaine SA initiative by The Founder Lainey Trequesser in March 2013. The Musiquelaine SA programme’s emphasis is to provide transformation of behavior to children at risk through the discipline of music. The bands are achieving remarkable levels of reading and technical skills and receive ongoing invitations to perform publicly at schools, festivals and departmental functions.
Merlin Julie is currently a lecturer at the University of Stellenbosch (SUN) in the Music Certificate Program.
He is a piano, organ and woodwind specialist with a focus in the Classical and Jazz genres. He also works in the Rural Engagement program at SUN. Merlin is a part-time educator at Rondebosch Boy’s Primary School, volunteers at Floreat and Steenberg Primary Schools in their Recorder Programme. He is the Director of the Steenberg High School Wind Band Programme and directs School, Church and Male Choirs, Wind Bands, Clarinet Ensembles, Saxophone Quintets, as well as numerous Musical productions, nationally and abroad. In application of his close to four decades of teaching experience, Merlin has been responsible for teaching Subject Music and Instrumental music for Grades 8-12.
Merlin Julie holds a Master of Music and Master of Arts degrees from Wayne State University, Detroit and New York University, respectively. His vocational qualifications include a Bachelor of Music degree in – Education, coupled with a Teacher’s Licentiate (School Music Diploma) from Rhodes University; RULS – School Music; BMus – Music Education; MMus – Music Education (Curriculum Development); MA – Music Therapy.
